Bodrum Sport Relief Mile
A smaller than hoped for band of stalwart fundraisers turned out in Bodrum on Sunday morning to participate in the worldwide Sport Relief Mile in one of the biggest mass participation events ever.
Shrugging off the lower numbers with good humor, Deniz Süleyman, initiator of the local Bodrum British Honorary Consulate’s support for the worldwide event, handed out Sports Relief t-shirts and water.
A last-minute change in decision by security authorities allowed the route of the walk to be changed so that walkers passed along the busy beachfront and street area from the disco to the castle and harbor square.
Along the way, impromptu donations were taken and t-shirts distributed while participants explained the event to passers-by.
Those attending congratulated themselves at the castle square with a considerable amount of money raised for children with disabilties at the Turgutreis Begonvil Rehabilitation Center run by the Bodrum Health Foundation.
Some of the foundation’s members also participated in the walk, carrying receipt books and the flags of the foundation.
Having completed the walk, the participants rejoined the rest of Bodrum’s population in celebrating life in the glorious sunshine, on countryside walks and picnics, beach side brunches and harbor side strolls.
The Sport Relief Mile is an initiative of the British charity Comic Relief, which raises money to help vulnerable people in the United Kingdom and the world’s poorest countries.
The event was just one of the hundreds of Sport Relief Mile events that take place in the U.K. from Friday, March 19, to Sunday, March 21. This year, British Foreign Office staff around the world took part for the first time
